There are more than 800 plus species of ant species known in India, but only a few are commonly found in our residences and are of concern in urban pest management.
Little black ants belong to the order; Hymenoptera and Family Formicidae. They are usually seen around homes and their trails between nest to food and water sources can be well observed.
A colony is usually moderately sized with only a few thousand workers. Monomorium minimum are scavengers that will consume anything from bird droppings to dead insects and inside the homes they feed on sweets, grease, fruits, breads etc.
They make nest in rotten wood, woodwork and the masonry of buildings
Features:
- They are very small – 1.5-2 mm in size
- Black shiny body
- Monomorphic species and they have multiple queen in a nest(polygyne)
